In the world, India is first in sugar production and sugarcane occupied
more than 25% of the country’s gross cropped area. Though, it is earning 7%
of the total value of agricultural output, still, the sugarcane cultivators are
facing many of the problems and challenges. They include problem of
finance, labour scarcity, higher wages of labour, high cost of production,
marketing difficulties, etc. Due to all these problems, the socio-economic
conditions of sugarcane cultivators is poor in India. To study the socioeconomic
conditions and problems faced by sugarcane cultivators, the
present study has been made in Jewargi taluka of Kalaburagi district in
Karnataka. A sample survey of 83 sugarcane cultivators in different villages
of Jewargi taluka was made using interview schedules. It is found that,
majority of these cultivators are facing problems of finance, labour, etc and
even majority of them are uncertain to get the expected price to the sugarcane
grown by them. Hence, it is suggested to revise and increase support price of
sugarcane every year. Further, it is suggested to the banks and other financial
institutions to provide financial assistance and loans to sugarcane cultivators
at lower rates of interest.
